{EUROPE} Days Eleven & Twelve - Pompeii (Naples), Italy + AT SEA

 Yesterday morning brought a new adventure as the kids, Hubby and I headed from Naples into Pompeii, but first, we made a stop to see cameos being made...


which was really neat!


Grandma had been before, many years ago with my dad, and I had been before over 20 years ago...

{July 2001}

but it was the first time visiting for 4 of us!

We entered near the gladiator barracks...


and then saw one of the amphitheatres...


Right past the amphitheatre, we had a great view of Mount Vesuvius...


Next, we took in some (really, really, really) old shop streets...


and checked out some houses, too...


We saw several fountains...


and an original(!) water pipe made out of lead!


I think what was most amazing to me, it that this town is close to 2000 years old and is so incredibly well preserved...


The last time I visited, I don't think I really appreciated how amazing it is!


Toward the end of our tour, we toured the remains of the forum...


the city hall...


and the judicial building...


On the road leading out, our guide pointed out the white pieces of marble in the street and mentioned that these were actually early reflectors for help seeing at night...just wild!


After leaving the town area, we toured the museum...


and saw coins that had been found...


as well as the plaster casts of people found in the ash...


just, literally, frozen...


in time...


What a morning...


As we were leaving, our guide pointed out a pepper tree. I had actually never, ever seen one before!


Once back out in the square, we got drinks... Slushies for the kids...


and a frozen limoncello drink for Hubby and me!


After we returned to the ship, I stayed on board with Grandma while Hubby and the kids went out in search of some pizza in Naples!

And, they found it!


The kids were not super impressed... Ha!


They also found M's shop! On our Rome day, Nico taught us that "mare" means "sea", but to us, it is a nickname for our sweet M!


They enjoyed walking around and saw the Castel Nuovo...


and then, grabbed some more gelato...


Hubby & B got hats, too!


It was a great afternoon in Naples!


We all met back up for dinner on the ship...


watched as we sailed away from Naples...


right past the island of Capri...


and got ready for a great night's sleep ahead of another day at sea!

Today, we took advantage of a lazy day at sea.


We went to a port talk to learn about one of our upcoming stops, did a little laundry and suitcase organization, enjoyed some pool time...


and ended the night with an outside movie up on the deck...


and some late night entertainment from these two...


accompanied by the water fountain light show...


Meanwhile, I think Hubby has settled in well...


A new country for 5 of the 6 of us tomorrow (and Grandma is getting off the ship)!!!
